What Art Gives a Child

My dear friends, today I want to share some thoughts on the question I hear often — does art even matter anymore?

Why pursue creative activities in a world where technology can generate images in seconds?

I’ll skip the familiar lines about fine motor skills and focus. Let’s look a little deeper.

Children who discover art from an early age grow up with a unique way of seeing the world.

They notice what others pass by: the way light falls on a wall in the early morning, the colour of a shadow cast by a tree on a sunny day, the quiet character in a stranger’s face. They don’t simply look — they observe. They don’t simply hear — they listen.

“Blessed are they who see beautiful things in humble places where other people see nothing.”

— Camille Pissarro

This is what art teaches from the very beginning — to find beauty where most people never think to look. Art gives a child a language for what cannot yet be put into words. A young child who cannot explain their anxiety picks up a pencil and moves it across the page — with energy, with feeling.

That is no longer silence. That is expression. And that is how a rich inner life begins to take shape.

Children like these tend to navigate uncertainty with greater ease. Art is a space where there is no single correct answer — where two people can look at the same painting, see entirely different things, and both be right. That is a rare and generous way to move through the world.

They carry it with them as they grow. In the way they make a home. In the way they truly listen to others. In the way they approach a problem from an angle no one else considered. Art does not make them artists. It makes them attentive, feeling and understanding.

If you would like your child to grow up this way — at Iris Art Studio I teach children’s art classes where learning happens naturally, with personal attention given to every child.

Most groups are already full, but a few places remain. Perhaps one of them is meant for your child.
