It was pure joy! 😍
😁 I still remember when the teacher finally let us draw illustrations instead of still lifes, which nobody really liked. Drawing real-life objects just didn’t feel exciting to me as a child. I can clearly recall my six years of intense study in art school in my hometown in Belarus.
Now that I’m an art teacher myself, I realise how important it is to choose fun and inspiring subjects for kids' art classes—ones that not only excite them but also teach them.
Even for drawing illustrations, kids need to understand the basics: proportions, colours, and shapes.
So, I created a fresh recipe for my lessons! I keep the educational component in mind but add a sprinkle of fun and creativity. Classical drawing exercises or drawing from life are never boring for my students!
😊 Why is observational drawing exciting? Because children learn how to draw realistically! Trust me, it’s thrilling when a child draws something that looks real and recognisable. Kids absolutely love this process!
Here are some fun ways to make life drawing engaging and exciting:
✔️ Drawing their favourite toy. What’s it like? Is it fluffy or smooth? What colours, textures, and little details can they notice? Often, kids love drawing their toys even more than playing with them!
✔️ Drawing nature’s treasures. My students adore my boxes full of pinecones, shells, and feathers. They get to pick their favourite treasure and capture it on paper.
And let’s not forget about outdoor drawing (plein air).
Sure, you could go full-on Monet and spend hours with an easel in the bush, but for a more kid-friendly option, how about:
✔️ An art walk with friends, sketchbooks in hand, through the park or forest, with fun art challenges.
Here’s the secret to learning how to draw: it’s all about learning how to see, not just look. 🧑🎨
Drawing from life helps kids truly see the world around them.
Our theme for the upcoming term in the studio is “See & Sketch.” We’ll be making life drawing FUN, helping your child learn to draw while also seeing the world in brighter, more beautiful ways.
Enrolments are opening soon. Don’t miss out! Now 5 groups will be availible in the studio, including Saturday.
